I've been wanting to make a patchwork project and Jane's pumpkin challenge was a perfect reason to play with paper scraps! I actually saw this technique on one of either Donna Downey or Dina Wakely's publications but they were making a mini book cover. We've all done this technique at one time or another. The only difference might be that random machine stitches are sewn over the dried papers before diecutting.
The machine stitching goes anywhere you desire, the wonkier the better! Try black thread for a different contrast.

Here's the diecut patchwork pumpkin. I was impatient to diecut it and the papers weren't 100% dry. You can see a slight tear in the lower right corner, but I'll cover that up with Distress ink or glue another scrap over it. I can't wait to finish my card for Club on Wednesday!
Enjoy!
